Marlon Wayans Indio Concert reviews
New Phantom great for newcomers, blah for vets
The production crew should be congratulated for their effort in reimagining the story, as I have seen the original show of Phantom multiple times over the years. For the younger generations, who haven't witnessed the show since its inception, they may find many aspects of the performance to be pleasing and well-executed.
As a veteran of the original show, I found the new production to be somewhat dispassionate and bordering on childish. This could be attributed to the relatively inexperienced actors or perhaps the director's choices.
While the innovation of the cylindrical set piece enhanced certain scenes, others suffered from a lack of a proper set. For instance, the two-piece graveyard scene, which was once grandiose, now feels like an afterthought.
After Intermission, noticeable changes took place. Some were successful in breathing new life into certain scenes, while others fell short. The show overall is commendable, but for those accustomed to the "old" regime, some improvements may be needed to restore its former glory.
I have also delved into various books related to the Phantom of the Opera, from Gaston Leroux's original work to more recent titles like Phantom and Phoenix of the Opera.
